Robert Moskowitz, Giacometti Piece III, 1997
Pastel on paper, 108 x 41 5/8 in
Lawrence Markey will feature a one person exhibition of drawings by New York painter Robert Moskowitz (American, b. 1935), spanning decades of the artist’s career, at this years ADAA Art Show. This will be Moskowitz' seventh solo presentation with Lawrence Markey, since our first exhibition in 1995.
Robert Moskowitz was included in the landmark 1978 exhibition “New Image Painting” at the Whitney Museum of American Art, associating Moskowitz with a generation of artists that embraced representational painting and examined new ways of incorporating imagery; veering away from the Minimal and Conceptual Art movements of the 1960’s.
Over the years, Moskowitz has developed an identifiable reductive style of high contrast silhouettes, explored in varying scales. Culling imagery from iconic architecture (the Empire State Building), antiquity (the tomb of the diver at Paestum), the human figure via sculptors such as Rodin, Brancusi and Giacometti, and more; the paradoxes between figure and ground, abstraction and representation, past and present, are emphasized in Moskowitz' work.
